Como parte del AA Politics of Fabrication Laboratory (AA Visiting School 1-12 August 2011), el simposio Politics of Fabrication trata de abrir el debate sobre un cambio de paradigma en la docencia en arquitectura promocionado por laboratorios de experimentación físico-digital y experiencias de acción directa como la Ciudad Abierta. El nuevo modo experimental de aprender y conocer relega la manera tradicional en la que se educaba al arquitecto a través del dominio de ciertos elementos y tipos canónicos, y lo sustituye por una docencia basada en la experimentación empírica, la dimensión intelectual especulativa y la lógica colaborativa en el diseño. Este modelo de aprendizaje no se ha limitado tan sólo al ámbito teórico-procesual propio de las instituciones académicas, sino que se ha imbuido del carácter específico los contextos particulares, materiales y culturales donde se ha insertado, generando un nuevo empuje de técnicas hibridas de construcción y fabricación en distintas variables etno-digitales.

El simposio reúne a académicos, profesionales y personalidades de la arquitectura para abrir un debate sobre las implicaciones entre particulares condiciones socio-culturales y actuales técnicas de fabricación digital. Este simpósio permitirá reunir em Portugal, no ISCTE‐IUL, um conjunto de investigadores de referência internacional, no campo da Fabricação Digital e da Arquitectura. Procura-se desafiar os participantes neste simpósio estimulando a reflexão e o debate sobre o modo como a computação pode contribuir para melhorar o desenho e a performance da arquitectura; como a experiência e percepção do espaço podem enriquecer-se através da integração de tecnologias emergentes; como a forma pode ser gerada e evoluir parametricamente e, acima de tudo, como tirar partido da modelação digital para produzir objectos físicos diferenciados.

Trata-se de um evento da maior relevância face aos novos desafios tecnológicos e de ensino da Arquitectura em Portugal. Com este simpósio

pretende-se indicar e partilhar novas metodologias de trabalho, linhas de investigação e profissionalização. O simpósio será complementado por um Workshop sobre fabricação digital onde será possível experimentar algumas das tecnologias abordadas durante as conferências.

This symposium will bring together in Portugal, ISCTE‐IUL, a set of internationally renowned investigators in the field of Digital Fabrication and Architecture. We challenge participants in this symposium to question and reflect on how the exploitation of computing can improve the design and performance of architecture; how the experience and perception of space can be enriched through the integration of emerging technologies; how shape can be parametrically generated and evolve and, above all, how to take advantage of digital modeling to produce different physical objects. This event is of great relevance in view of the new technological challenges and the teaching of Architecture in Portugal. With this event we aim to underline and share new conceptual and research methodologies as well as new career opportunities. The symposium will be followed by a Workshop on Digital Manufacturing where the participants can experience some of the technologies addressed to in the lectures.

The theme, ’Machinic Processes’, refers not only to new digital fabrication processes, such as CNC milling and 3-D printing, but also to the innovative use of new parametric and algorithmic design techniques. Since 2004 the adoption of these techniques in China has been rapid. The design of buildings such as the Birds Nest stadium would not have been feasible without the use of new parametric modeling techniques and Building Information Modeling software. Meanwhile, although the construction industry in China has relied heavily on manual labor in the past, digital fabrication technologies are beginning to play an increasingly important role in the construction of buildings throughout China, and are set to play an even more significant role in the future. El AW2 es un Taller/Seminario intensivo de Fabricación Digital que aborda el tema del Espacio Público, es impartido por ARTificial con la asesoría de la ONG INTERacciones y está abierto a todos los diseñadores del continente Latino-Americano con interés en el desarrollo de propuestas para la re-activación del espacio público y a la aplicación de Rhinoceros+Grasshopper, orientado a la fabricación digital. Parte esencial del Seminario Será la exploración de la manera y en la que el Griego-ateniense utiliza el Espacio Público y la superposición de propuestas que modifiquen la aproximación que los Peruano-limeños tienen hacia el Espacio Público. Finalmente las propuestas serán diseñadas y fabricadas mediante el uso de medios digitales: Software Paramétrico y maquinas de Fabricación Digital.

Objetivos Generales del AW2

El rol del diseñador será más cercano al de provocador de reacciones. La presencia de un objeto que forma parte del paisaje urbano no es inocente, los elementos fisicos del espacio público logran sobre si mismos una atracción y una repulsión al mismo tiempo. Los ciudadanos son los principales actores del Espacio Público y su comportamiento natural en este revela la condición real de la Ciudad. ¿Es posible cambiar la condición actual de una ciudad mediante la modificación de los elementos que componen el paisaje urbano?

Programa de capacitación para dirigir y ser tutor de un Fab Lab.

El Fab Academy es un programa Mundial dirigido por el Center of Bits and Atoms del MIT que ofrece nuevas capacidades relacionadas a la Fabricación Digital, sus implicancias y aplicaciones. El Diploma es comparable a finalizar el curso de prototipado rápido del MIT "How to Make (almost) Anything" (‘’Cómo Hacer -casi- Todo’’). Ofrece un Diploma de capacitación técnica y profesional acreditado por la Red Fab Academy y las instituciones locales.

La duración del curso es de 9 meses y se dictará por primera vez en Latinoamerica en el Fab Lab Lima.

El Fab Academy es la universidad global de la Fabricación Digital, donde el campus es el planeta y las aulas son los Fab Labs locales. Los laboratorios cuentan con tutores o gurús que han sido previamente entrenados en un Fab Lab que a su vez, serán capaces de replicar la experiencia en nuevos Fab Labs.

History

Prior to being spun off into a "stand-alone" collocated meeting, Digital Fabrication was a technical session within NIP. Held for the first time in 2005, it has been an annual conference ever since.

Scope

Digital Fabrication explores the potential of digital printing technologies with sessions on new applications and materials that go well beyond traditional printing. Digital fabrication techniques have been used for biomedical applications, as well as to produce MEMS and new electronic devices. Conference topics include 2D & 3D functional printing and micromachining; digital fabrication instrumentation; ink jet printing processes; laser patterning processes, direct-write, and integration in printing manufacturing lines; process materials and substrates for digital fabrication; nano-patterning and imprint technologies; prototyping technology; printed sensors, photovoltaic cells, lighting devices, biomaterials, architectural components and electronics and devices; and industrial and commercial digital fabrication.

Since 2005, Digital Fabrication has been held in conjunction with the NIP Conference.

Central to the aim of FABRICATE is to interrogate and disseminate architectural innovation in design and making practices accross industry and academia. Submissions will be independently blind reviewed by two members of an international panel of experts.

As the conference is seeking to ‘break the mould’ in gathering and publishing innovative built or partially built material, the call for works emphasises a very high standard of diverse visual content to accompany text. It is recommended that submissions include an appropriate range of images including concept sketches, early iterations, CAD and physical models, photography, manufacturing or construction information, scripting, test pieces, prototypes, parallel experiments, final assemblies, artefacts in use, revisions, renovations, subsequent iterations, as well as information on the spaces in which such works were created.

Our online submission system will go online on 9 August 2011. The Call for Work deadline is the 10 September 2011.

REPEAT: Digital Fabrication Competition 2010

REPEAT as an international competition is established to foster the creative spirit in the burgeoning field of digital fabrication.

We encourage the generation of cutting edge design proposals for a structure of your design with the only caveats being it be generated and conceived digitally, incorporate repetitive elements, be optimized for relocation and transportation and be produced through fabrication technologies available within Houston, Texas.

judging + criteria: The evaluation of all the REPEAT proposals will focus on the cohesion of the design concept to digital fabrication techniques and methods of assembly. Factoring in these two foundational requirements for the competition, the entrant is encouraged to propose a solution that is both formally challenging in the mechanics and aesthetics of the connections, but also speak to the issues of use and performance. Después de 4 días de intenso trabajo, el FabLab Medellín bajo la dirección de Gabriel Ochoa presentan el 3 de Julio el resultado del trabajo realizado. El Museo de Arte Moderno (MAMM)de Medellín acoge esta muestra que marca uno de los logros en latinoamérica por mantenerse en la vanguardia digital.

DHUB FabLab Machines That Make Machines

Este taller tiene como objetivo dar a conocer e instruir a los participantes en el uso de algunas de las herramientas actualmente disponibles para la fabricación digital personal. Durante las dos semanas de este taller veremos como construir nuestra propia MakerBot Cupcake CNC, desde el hardware y el software hasta la producción de nuestras propias piezas en plástico ABS.

En una segunda fase, utilizaremos nuestra recién construida Cupcake CNC para replicar o fabricar las piezas en ABS necesarias para la construcción de una RepRap Mendel, una maquina “open source” en la cual se basa la misma MakerBot Cupcake CNC.

Este taller esta dirigido a todos aquellos que tienen un interés por la fabricación personal, y será seguramente un excelente punto de partida para todos aquellos que tienen interés en construir su propia Cupcake (MakerBot), RepRap o Fab@Home.

Autonomy of Architecture, the impact of file-to-factory on architectural practice

On the 11th of June, a conference will be hosted at the Protospace, which deals with how file-to-factory processes impact architectural practice.

Computational Architecture has a polarizing effect on architecture; on one hand the development of new design tools for architectural conception allow us to deal with more abstract design notions, on the other hand these designs are pushed beyond description, towards definition. Architects such as Kas Oosterhuis ( ONL /Hyperbody research group ), Fabian Schreurer ( designtoproduction) and Fabio Gramazio ( Gramazio & Kohler ) manage to fabricate from such a rigorous architectural definition. Fabian has been writing programs to generate NC code from which architectural elements are produced and in a similar way the members of theDFAB lab ( ran by Matthias Kohler and Fabio Gramazio ) produces the instructions for their brick laying robot. Philippe Morel ( partner in EZCT Architecture & Design Research ) will provide context of this important development in architecture with his lecture “Knowledge, Machines and Autonomy”.

1. Introduction

A recent article in Wired Magazine entitled “The next Industrial Revolution” should be cause for concern for most people in design and manufacturing fields (Anderson, 2010). Fear of a revolution in manufacturing and design should follow the same concerns we once had over jobs and communication during the internet revolution. The fear is with good reason; so far the internet has shaken the foundation of news organisations and the traditional keepers of information. The United States has seen extermination of many local and international newspapers. Society now trusts information generated by nonexpert sources (blogs) as much as they do expert sources. In many design fields, in particular architecture, the internet has given rise to drafting and rendering industries that generate images and construction documents overnight. (...)

Todas las ediciones americanas de Solar Decathlon se han celebrado en el National Mall de Washington, con gran impacto mediático y social, y cientos de miles de visitantes.

The first edition of the Solar Decathlon was held in 2002; the second in 2005; the third in 2007. The most recent competition was held in October 2009 and 20 teams representing as many universities from the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, Germany and Spain competed.

En 2010, por primera vez SD se celebra fuera de Estados Unidos. La primera edición de Solar Decathlon Europe tendrá lugar en Madrid en junio de este año. Fruto del acuerdo alcanzado entre las administraciones de EEUU y España, Solar Decathlon celebrará sus ediciones americanas en los años impares (la próxima en 2011) y sus competiciones europeas en los años pares.

All of the competitions that have been held so far have been located in the National Mall in Washington D.C., and have resulted in great media and social impact, with more than 100,000 visitors attending the competition.

Tras un proceso de selección, Solar Decathlon Europe 2010 ha escogido a 20 universidades de reconocido prestigio de Europa, América y Asia para participar en la competición que se celebrará en Madrid en junio de 2010.

Topology is the main driving force of the design of the Austrian pavilion, a major area of mathematics concerned with spatial properties that are preserved under continuous deformations of objects, for example deformations that involve stretching, but no tearing or gluing. It emerged through the development of concepts from geometry and set theory, such as space, dimension, and transformation.

The main qualities for the project formed the mainframe of the topological surface. The software output consisted of an extensive array of subtly varying surface conditions. According to their performative behavior the population of over one hundred individual entities where scrutinized for their fitness according to different criteria, such as the potential to fulfill the program, the performance as structural entity and the affect generated by its appearance. This process reduced potential candidates to a very small number. Finally this candidates ran trough a series of algorithms (various remeshings, subdivisions, optimizing the size of the spatial pockets etc.) which eliminated all candidates but one.

This technique can be described as an evolutionary process driven by a series of intensive forces, such as the specific compartmentisation of the pouches, the loadbearing qualities of curvilinear conditions and the allover sensual experience of the space. The numerous explorations and investigations of SPAN into the nature of topological bodies, throughout the recent years, served as basis for the design process. One of the results of these investigations was a series of models only dedicated to seamless, continuous circulations within architectural bodies and apertures in complex curved geometries. These two fundamental architectural conditions, opening and circulation, are discussed in the project of the Austrian Pavilion for the Shanghai Expo 2010 in an alternative way.

The lecture describes the design process of the Austrian Pavilion for the Shanghai Expo 2010, as well as the construction method. The lecture depicts the advanced fabrication methods involved in the construction of the Project, such as the use of simulation softwares, building information modeling and CNC fabrication.

The competition is been established with the collaboration of Spanish Agency of International Development Cooperation (Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo, AECID).
The Fab Academy is a newly created platform, driven by the international network of Fab Labs, which promotes the training of people in the principles, applications and implications of digital fabrication.
The program will be developed in Barcelona from September 2009 to May 2010 at the headquarters of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia. Students will participate in an international program in which they will learn multiple techniques in digital fabrication.
After the finalization of the program, Fab Lab Bcn in collaboration with AECID will assist in the installation of a Fab Lab in the participant´s city of origin to encourage the invention and creation of local platforms for social and economical development.
This platform will pursue the promotion of economic projects using the Internet as the main tool for networking.
REQUIREMENTS

Be a citizen from Ethiopia or Peru.
English language.
Must be 18 to 45 years old.
Ability to develop and work on group projects
Basic computer skills

En Enero del 2008 fueron seleccionados 5 proyectos de un total de 400 propuestas, por un jurado del MoMA. El objetivo, diseñar viviendas prefabricadas en el lote 53West contiguo al MoMA con un presupuesto de US$175.000 para cada uno. Los seleccionados fueron:

Larry Sass, Cambridge: yourHOUSE for New Orleans; (2880 Kb)
Douglas Gauthier y Jeremy Edmiston, New York: Burst 008;
Oskar Leo Kaufmann y Albert Rüf, Austria: System3 House;
Richard Horden de Horden Cherry Lee, Munich: Micro Compact Home.
En 4 meses mas, no sólo en el lote de arriba se verá el proceso de como se hicieron estos proyectos, funcionamiento y distribución de los mismos, en el sexto piso de la galeria del MoMA se incluirá la documentación de 58 proyectos más en el que se examina este fenómeno en el contexto de la arquitectura moderna, con documentales y proyectos desde 1833 al presente en el que se incluye a Kisho Kurokawa, Frank Lloyd Wright, Marcel Breuer, Wes Jones, Jean Prouvel, Namba Kazuhiko, Konrad Wachsmann, Richard Rogers, así como algunas iniciativas de Thomas Edison y Buckminster Fuller. Cooper Robertson Partners, el estudio newyorkino encargado del MoMAQNS será quien fabricará los proyectos. Este mes, el MoMA habilitará la exhibición en línea documentando el proceso. MIT takes Manhattan es el titulo que usa esta semana Sara H. Wrigth en MIT News, a propósito de la exhibición, con proyectos de Neri Oxman (Technical Chair en ACADIA 2008), del profesor Larry Sass (Director del Digital Design Fabrication Group del MIT), de Carlo Ratti (Director del Laboratorio SENSEable City de MIT), y otros proyectos provenientes del MIT School of Architecture and Planning y del Media Lab and the Design Lab de MIT. Technology Review, Enero/Febrero 2008. The Building, Digitally Remastered es el titulo del ensayo fotográfico de 8 proyectos desarrollados entre 1996 y el 2006 en base a las diferentes técnicas y avances en diseño y manufactura. Este mes en la pagina de Technology Review, Upland Productions produce bajo el título Digital Master Builders como el modelado por computadora ha revolucionado el diseño y la construcción con entrevistas a Kimo Giggs y Tim Eliassen.

Three Dimensional Printing (3DP) es la tecnología desarrollada en el Massachusetts Institute of Technology para la producción rápida y flexible de componentes, prototipos, piezas finales y objetos obtenidos directamente de un modelo CAD. El proceso ha sido desarrollado para trabajar casi sobre cualquier tipo de material, en los que se incluyen los metales, la cerámica, polímeros y resinas. En la actualidad ha sido licenciada a cinco compañias norteamericas y una japonesa a través de la MIT Technology Licensing Office. Pero su difusión comercial empezó en 1994 gracias a que Marina Hatsopoulos negoció la patente y fundó Z corporation, productos que ahora son parte de las principales escuelas de arquitectura en el mundo.
En el 2002 Larry Sass, actual Director del Digital Design Fabrication Group del MIT desarrolla el Advanced Course en Digital Fabrication usando una 3DP. Hoy en el MIT los cursos incluyen, el 4.501 Architectural Construction and Computation, el 4.510 Digital Design Fabrication y el 4.511 Digital Design Fabrication Workshop. Entre el 2002 y el 2003 Dan Schodek y Kimo Griggs desarrollan en la Graduate School of Design de Harvard los cursos 6319 CAD/CAM: Digital Design Environments hoy llamado CAD/CAM II: Design Development in Digital Environments y el 6320 CAD/CAM Fabrication Environments que hoy se conoce como Computer Aided Design & Manufacturing III. La exploración intensiva y el análisis de estos procesos tuvieron como contexto la construcción del Ray and Maria Stata Center de Frank Gehry. Arriba detalles de los prototipos en la exhibicion StudioWorks (GSD, 2004). Disfrute de unos minutos viendo como trabaja el modelo ZPrinter 450.

Los laboratorios de prototipado cuentan con diferentes alternativas, como la tecnología Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) comercializada por Stratasys que viene siendo usada en el Laboratorio de Imágen Sólida en la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad Católica de Chile desde el 2006.
Los laser de corte permiten la precisión que se requiere para las piezas de una superficie de desarrollo o cualquier otra del tipo euclidiana, y en mucho casos permite obtener diferentes alternativas y propuestas en poco tiempo. Arriba, visitando a Daniel Cardoso en el MIT, (verano del 2006)
